Grand Port

Things to do - general

Grand Port is situated in the southeastern part of the island. The name means “large port” in French. It encompasses much of the southeastern part of Mauritius and it is here where the only airport on the island is located.

It is the cradle of Mauritian history, the place where the first human inhabitants of the island landed on 9 September 1598. It is named after the village of ‘Old Grand Port’, which was the first Dutch port of the island.

With a stunning but rugged landscape it has often been said it resembles flashes of India, Ireland and the Caribbean.

The district’s most well-known and popular beach is Pointe d’Esny. This beach is one of the most beautiful on the whole island. The white sandy beaches stretch for miles along the coast as the deep, clear, turquoise blue ocean waves lap up against the shore. Ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
